Collage of Kelvin Shannon's Life (So Far)

Our firstborn son, Kelvin Caleb Mordecai Shannon, passed away unexpectedly on March 17th at the age of 28.
Kelvin had an artistic bent; I will upload a photo of at least one of his pieces later; also, some photos of the "art" he created in his trade as a plasterer. He was so skilled at his trade that many building contractors demanded him by name. That's to come later, though. For now, I'm uploading a wonderful collage that was created for display at his funeral services.
The man who created this collage from a pile of our old family photos is a renowned artist, specializing in sports art (he happens to be a friend of the family). He and his wife (also an artist, obviously) normally collaborate on these sorts of projects. Their website is here:

I say, "(so far)" in the title of this post because we expect to see Kelvin again, in a better world. That doesn't make missing him acceptable, but it does make it tolerable (even if only barely at times).
Thanks again, Andy!

You can also see in the collage his magnificent mother Cherri, his wonderful younger brother Morgan, and me.

New Ice Age Trail book available: "Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Throughout the Seasons"

As readers of this blog know, from late 2009 to late 2010, I spent a lot of time walking various sections of the Ice Age Trail, camera in hand. I spent most of my hiking time close to home, but also made trips to both terminuses (termini?) of the Ice Age Trail -- to the northwest on the Minnesota border along the Mississippi River near the town of St. Croix Falls, and to the northeast on Wisconsin's “thumb” in Door County.

Additionally, I made forays to the Devils Lake, Dells of the Eau Claire, and Gibraltar Rock Segments. I then released a large book of photography from those forays into the forest and hikes in the hills in late 2010 or early 2011. Due to the large format and number of photographs, though, that book is quite expensive (to print, and to purchase).

Therefore, I have made available a new “scaled down” version of the book, namely "Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Throughout the Seasons." The images are 5” X 7.5” (as opposed to 7” X 10”) and there are only 30 of them instead of around 100. This makes the new book sort of a “best of” version of the earlier one, and is much less expensive (as noted $16, as opposed to $50-$75).

"Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Throughout the Seasons" is somewhat like two of the installments of the "Waukesha County Trilogy" I recently released (the two with the subtitle "Throughout the Seasons") however this one (Ice Age Trail) is not a photoetry book - instead of pairing poetry with the photos, I have included "field notes" about the images.

Herein I present my favorite 30 Ice Age Trail images of mine in the chronology that makes the most sense to me – starting with Spring and continuing through Summer, Fall, and finally Winter. Spring, to me, is the true beginning of the year, and Winter the finale.

Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Throughout the Seasons can be purchased for $16 (cheap at twice the price!) from:

Or directly from amazon:

"Waukesha County Trilogy" Now Available

As a follow-on to the last "teaser" post, here are the links for the three members/installments of the so-called Waukesha County Trilogy:

Visions of Old World Wisconsin: https://www.createspace.com/3700218

Lapham Peak Throughout the Seasons: https://www.createspace.com/3700330

Nashotah Park Throughout the Seasons: https://www.createspace.com/3700333

Note that these are small books, or booklets, specifically 8.25" X 6". This "downsizing" was the only way to keep the cost (to/for you, dear reader!) to a reasonable level. My previous photography book ("A Trail For All Seasons: Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail") had to be priced at $75 to cover the printing costs. These booklets (which contains 5' X 7.5" photos, retaining the 2:3 ratio the camera produces (IOW, they do not need to be cropped at that ratio/size)) are relatively inexpensive at $16 each. You can purchase the whole set, or just one or two (or even none, but then why are you reading this?).

Final note: Maybe it should be plain, but I wrote the poetry paired with the photographs in the two "Throughout the Seasons" booklets.

I don't have any links for you yet, but I should within a week or two at the most. Here are the covers of the three "installments" of the Waukesha County Trilogy.

Each one contains 30 photographs, which either have a corresponding poem (the two "Throughout the Seasons" booklets) or related historical information (the Old World Wisconsin booklet).

Last Call for Free Wallpapers

Some time ago, I made some scenic photographs (mostly of Wisconsin) freely available for downloade (suitable as desktop wallpapers). You can get them from:

http://www.photoshop.com/users/bclayshannon

These will only be available for a short time, as I am going to close my photoshop account (not that I have any problems or "beefs" with them; just a case of transitioning into a personal "austerity mode"). So if you want to get them, get them now; I will be closing the account soon, possibly as soon as the end of this month (October 2011)

Help me Ron &/or Rhonda!

I am getting within hailing distance of completing my "Waukesha County Trilogy" of photography* books, and would like your (that means you) help in determining which photos to use.

I could easily just choose the ones I like best, of course, but I don't know if my taste is representative enough. For those interested, please go to:

...and check out the "Lapham Peak", "Nashotah Park" and "Old World Wisconsin" albums, and then send me, at "b clay shannon at att dot net" the list of photos that you would like to see printed in the respective books.

For example, if you open the Lapham Peak album, and you want to "vote" for the first picture shown, designate it by its filename ("Forest_Lapham101106")

Thank you in advance!

* Two of them will be "photoetry" books (combining photography and poetry)
